It is easy for anyone – individuals to companies – to be overwhelmed and focus on the negatives when faced with COVID-19's adversities. We tend to forget that it is also during this time that humanity shines the brightest. This week, we witness a charity initiative organised by some of our crew to care and help their community in need during this difficult period.

This charity initiative was held in Balikpapan, which is the homeport of three of our Palm tankers. Our crew onboard these vessels have collaborated to organise a charity drive to distribute welfare packages to the boatmen and drivers whose livelihoods are greatly affected by the suspension of crew shore leaves and most port activities due to COVID-19. They gathered some money and arranged to purchase some essentials items such as rice, sugar, cooking oil, etc. to be packed into 64 welfare packages for distribution.

Our crew's selflessness is both heartfelt and commendable. They have embraced our company’s values and demonstrated compassion, kindness, and generosity to others even during the heat of a crisis. Well done, our fellow crew members!

We recently managed to successfully disembark our Chief Engineer from our vessel, Rising Himeji in Singapore. Now, he has arrived in Kuala Lumpur safely and serving home quarantine.

It was with MPA's great support and assistance that he was finally able to sign-off and was accommodated on one of the POSH vessels until he could board his flight home. With the COVID-19 restrictions imposed by countries, it is common for many maritime companies to face global challenges in disembarking their crew after the completion of their contract. Our Chief Engineer had previously handed over his relief and was waiting for a port to allow his disembarkment for nearly two months.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore for their assistance and PACC Offshore Services Holdings Ltd for their hospitality. They have allowed us to witness a great example of how the maritime sector can work together during a pandemic to overcome the challenges faced by companies and seafarers.

For this month’s Voices of Maritime series, SMF brings to you the #WFHEdition. While our frontline workers work tirelessly around the clock to keep the Port of Singapore running, we want to share the stories of other members of the maritime community who are also working hard to ensure that their operations continue to run smoothly, amidst the circuit breaker measures.

This week, Ronald Kuok, General Manager, Chartering, Bulk Division in PACIFIC CARRIERS LIMITED, shares with us how his team has adapted during these uncertain times.

Keep a lookout for other individuals whom we will be featuring in the upcoming weeks!
